Erythromycin 400 mg tablets

What is erythromycin and what are its uses?

  • Erythromycin contains the active ingredient erythromycin, which belongs to a group of drugs called macrolide antibiotics.

Erythromycin is used to prevent and treat infections such as:

  • Throat and sinus infections.
  • Chest infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
  • Ear infections.
  • Oral and dental infections.
  • Eye infections.
  • Skin and tissue infections, such as acne.
  • Gastroenteritis.
  • Prevention of infection after burns, operations, or dental procedures.
  • Other infections, such as sexually transmitted diseases, bone infections, or scarlet fever.

What you need to know before using erythromycin: Do not use erythromycin:

  • If you are allergic (severely allergic) to erythromycin or other macrolide antibiotics such as clarithromycin or azithromycin, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine

Warnings and precautions:

You should tell your doctor if you:

  • Do you have any liver problems or have you been told that any medications you are taking could cause liver problems?
  • I have previously experienced diarrhea after using antibiotics.
  • If you are treating a young child with antibiotics and they are irritable or vomiting while breastfeeding, you should contact your doctor immediately.
  • He suffers from a condition called myasthenia gravis, which causes muscle weakness. Consult your doctor before taking erythromycin.

Other medications and erythromycin: Tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, especially if you are taking:

  • This is especially important if you are taking medications from the following families:
  • Astemizole, terfenadine or mizolastine (used to treat allergies such as hay fever).
  • Domperidone (used to treat nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting (illness)).
  • Pimozide (used to treat mental health problems).
  • Ergotamine or dihydroergotamine (used to relieve migraine headaches).
  • Cisapride (for the treatment of stomach disorders).
  • Cholesterol-lowering drugs (used to help lower cholesterol levels, such as lovastatin and simvastatin).
  • Protease inhibitors (used to treat viral infections such as saquinavir).
  • Oral contraceptives.
  • Colchicine (for the treatment of gout and arthritis).
  • Cimetidine and omeprazole (used to treat acid reflux and other related conditions).
  • Clarithromycin, rifabutin, or rifampicin (medicines used to treat various types of bacterial infections).
  • Fluconazole, ketoconazole and itraconazole (drugs used to treat fungal infections).
  • Digoxin, quinidine, or disopyramide (for treating heart problems).
  • Cilostazol (a drug used to treat peripheral circulatory problems).
  • Hexobarbital, phenobarbital or midazolam (used as sedatives).
  • Anticoagulants such as warfarin, acenocoumarol and rivaroxaban (used to thin the blood).
  • Valproate, carbamazepine or phenytoin (used to control epilepsy).

How to use erythromycin:

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

The recommended dose of erythromycin for adults and children over 8 years of age is:

  • 1-2 grams daily, divided into daily doses taken before or with meals or food.
  • If you have a bad infection, you may be asked to take up to 4 grams a day.
  • Continue taking this medication until the course is complete or until your doctor tells you to stop; do not stop taking your medication, even if you feel better. If you stop treatment too early, your problem may return.

Possible side effects: Stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention if:

  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, which may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing.

How to store erythromycin

  • Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Erythromycin should not be stored above 25°C. Store it in the original packaging and keep the container tightly closed.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date shown on the package after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
  • Do not dispose of medications down the drain or in household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.
  • The dosage form and method of administering erythromycin should be prescribed according to the therapeutic indication and severity of the disease for each individual patient.
